After Ahmedabad we're on to Brisbane.
We're just starting to work so this page is still under construction.

These are the bags we're proposing to put as an alternative to Plastic bags. And they work. These bags are already doing wonders in Ahmedabad.

16th January 2008:

St. Xavier's School, Loyola Hall, Delhi Public School and St. Xavier's Gandhinagar are now officially part of our program. :)

And St. Xavier's Loyola has already bought a 100 bags to spread awareness in the school. Also two very distinguished professors Father Morondo and Mr. Kalpak Kothari have bought a 100 bags each to spread awareness from their own side. :)

Every week Ahmedabad throws away an estimated 40 lakh plastic bags. Multiply that by 52. The numbers are staggering. Ahmedabad throws away about 200 million (yes MILLION) plastic bags every year.

These plastic bags, once they leave our hands end up filling huge landfills, in the sewers, flying across the roads, in dumps and in the animals of our city.

Have you noticed the bloated stomachs of cows in Ahmedabad? No it doesn’t mean they’re getting food. They’re full of plastic.

I mean there are dogs on the road stuffing their insides with plastic. Since they can't digest the plastic bags, they get stuck in their intestines thereby totally clogging up their digestive systems which just means a slow and painful death for them. I have a little dog of my own and LOVE dogs and it just breaks my heart to see this happening in front of my very own eyes.

The National Geographic Institute estimates that over 100,000 marine animal deaths per year are directly related to ingestion of plastic bags.

Do you remember the floods that hit Gujarat last year? Do you know one reason why the floods were so severe? Because there were hundreds of plastic bags choking the drains of our cities.

But do you also realize one thing? These plastic bags end up in US, us humans.

These innocuous looking plastic bags photodegrade over time. No not biodegrade, photodegrade over time to form a powder. This powder gets mixed with the soil is sucked up by plants eventually ending up in our stomachs.

The toxins released by the plastic bags enter the sea through various sources and again eventually end up in the food cycle and in us leading to obesity, infertility, cancer and God knows what more. Plastic debris acts like a sponge for toxic chemicals, soaking up a million fold greater concentration of such deadly compounds as PCBs and DDE (a breakdown product of the notorious insecticide DDT).

The numbers are staggering. And we don’t even know we’re doing it. Yes, a lot of us realize that plastics are bad. But do we really know how bad they are? You know, lets just take a look at the broader statistics that make up what I like to call the plastic plague:

The world uses more than 1.2 trillion plastic bags a year - an average of about 300 bags for every adult, or 1m bags used per minute.
On average, we use each plastic bag for 12 minutes before discarding it. It then can last in the environment for decades.
47% of windborne litter escaping from landfills is plastic - much of it plastic bags.
About 80% of all marine rubbish comes from off the land, and nearly 90% is plastic. In June 2006 the UN environment programme estimated that there were an average of 46,000 pieces of plastic debris floating on or near the surface of every square mile of ocean.
Plastic bag litter is lethal in the marine environment, killing at least 100,000 birds, whales, seals and turtles every year. After an animal is killed by plastic bags, its body decomposes and the plastic is released back into the environment, where it can kill again.
A report, Plastic Debris in the World’s Oceans, by Greenpeace, suggests that at least 267 marine species are known to have suffered from entanglement or ingestion of marine debris. An estimated 1 million seabirds choke or get tangled in plastic nets or other debris every year.

And yes, the next plastic bag you use WILL add to this menace.

But then, where is a way out? You can’t just not use plastic bags. You need to carry stuff, don’t you?

Hello! Nice to see you here… I’m glad you’re hear to take the initiative and save our city. :)

My dad, Sanjiv Sood and his partner Rajiv Badlani own Norquest Brands Pvt. Ltd. that manufactures these reusable bags for customers all over the world. See http://www.badlani.com/bags/ more information. We’ve worked together on this problem and have come out with an alternative to plastic bags. We’ve engineered these bags to be durable (its made of the material that goes into making parachutes), waterproof, washable and extremely portable (this bag folds into a small pouch that fits into your pocket). The biggest attraction of plastic bags are that they’re free. What we could do is make low quality, cheaper bags which wont last as long. But that really doesn’t solve our purpose, does it? We want people to use these bags again and again.

Therefore to subsidise this very high quality bag (forgive the modesty but it is) we’re looking to sell advertising space on either side of the bags.

This way the bag becomes cheaper for the consumer.

We estimate that every such bag replaces about a 1000 plastic bags. A THOUSAND!!! We want people to use these bags. Do you realize that even one such bag reduces the negative impact on environment HUGELY. And it is NOT difficult. We're doing it already. We want you to join in.

Our goal is to have everyone use these reusable bags; to save our beautiful city (I’ve been around the world and believe me when I tell you, Ahmedabad rocks!) We want you to share our goal.

Plastic sucks. Throw away plastic bags are slowly and steadily (mind the steadily) killing and destroying ALL that we've loved. Animals are dying every second. The ecosystem is practically getting clogged by plastic bags.

We're here to fight against this scourge. What we’re trying to do here is offer a low cost alternative to the consumer. We don’t expect the consumer to pay a heavy price for a bag to use instead of plastic bags because the one big attraction to the consumer is that plastic bags are free.

Handing out cheap low quality bags also won’t work because that doesn’t solve our purpose to replace plastic bags. Therefore to subsidise a good quality bag for the end consumer we’re looking to sell advertising space on either side of the bag. Thus your contribution helps it make the bag cheaper for the consumer while also giving you a lot of advertising. We appeal to you’re social responsibility and also your business intuition. If you are a company that takes your Corporate Social Responsibility seriously this is your chance to prove it.

Which corporation doesn’t want to be perceived as caring and responsible and therefore deserving of trust and loyalty?

You think you can achieve that spending a few billion dollars saying so? No one will believe you or even take you seriously. But advertise a few reusable bags and see what happens.

Bags are the most economical advertising and promotional medium in the world. They get re-used hundreds of times and act as a walking billboard for you every time they are used...

“One great thing about bags is that everybody uses them,” says Andrew Spellman, vice president of corporate markets for TRG Group in St. Louis, Missouri. “Since everyone has stuff to hold, there’s not one person who doesn’t have a bag of some sort. Promotionally speaking, there’s an inherent use value for the recipient, and this means, for the advertiser, there’s the frequent opportunity for seeing the company logo.”

One way or the other, there has never been a better time in history to consider an environmentally friendly reusable fabric bag for your next major promotion.

We realize that you cannot revamp your inventory and remove all your plastic bags. We want you to offer this bag as an alternative to plastic bags to the consumers who come buy from you. Just tell them a bit about how plastic is harmful. How it is literally cold bloodedly killing our environment and then let them make the choice. Save the environment of a 1000 plastic bags or just add one more to the menace.

We know that you’re keeping the bags to save the environment yet we will be more than happy to compensate you with percentage of the sales to keep you motivated in this project. :)

The point is that no part of the whole chain should feel any burden. We literally want you to be the superheroes who get paid. :)

Go spread the word. Show people this website. Tell them how plastic is harming the environment. Tell them to STOP USING PLASTIC!!! We just cant afford to be lax anymore. If you think that there is someone who can be convinced and just needs a push in the right direction tell us, we'll come over and explain in detail how plastic harms us.

Go get yourself one of these and use it again and again. Next time you go to a grocery store REFUSE a plastic bag. If you have a good bag at home use it. Tell your friends, relatives anyone who is willing to listen. If they aren't willing to listen MAKE THEM. Plastic is Earth Cancer. We cannot ignore it anymore.
